Seller Rating:. Published by HarperCollins Publishers Revaluation Books Exeter, United Kingdom. He suffers from constant low-level nausea and a squeaky prostate. However, Baddiel quickly finds his own themes and tones, for one simple reason: he is more interested in character and psychology than in meaningless fancy descriptive writing.
Baddiel's characters appear real, rather than creative writing class constructs. Harvey ghosts the autobiographies of appalling celebrities and is currently labouring at the memoirs of a year-old singer called Lark "who has done, as far as he can make out, absolutely nothing". Harvey's mother, one of Eli's many ex-wives, was so angry at being betrayed by her husband, she embraced radical feminism and became a lesbian.
She was saved from her permanent rage, paradoxically, by Alzheimer's: "the neurological airbrushing, which meant she forgot what she was angry about". Over in a nursing home in London is another abandoned bride, Violet, Eli's early muse.
Baddiel incorporates into his book some furious diatribes against the fascist regimes that prevail in old folks' glue factories where independence is taken away, privacy disregarded and the inmates drugged and gaga. At the opposite extreme, in terms of age, is Colette, Eli's precocious eight-year-old daughter by wife number five or six. Baddiel's portrait of an egomaniacal artist is totally plausible. Eli was arrogant enough to reject the Nobel Prize. Add to cart. Very Good. Used - Good. Ships from the UK. Former Library book. Shows some signs of wear, and may have some markings on the inside.
